The polyphenols, carotenoids, and flavonoids from whole foods come with thousands of other compounds that work together synergistically. It's not just the antioxidant effect — it's the entire phytonutrient package.
Exercise, even though it creates free radicals during exertion, builds your endogenous antioxidant defense system. Your body adapts by producing more glutathione and antioxidant enzymes. That's actually how you get stronger.
Targeted antioxidant supplementation in specific contexts shows promise. Astaxanthin for joint inflammation. Curcumin with black pepper for absorption in certain disease states. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) for specific respiratory conditions. But these aren't “more is better” situations — they're dose-specific and condition-specific.
The big lesson: your body isn't a bucket that gets filled up with antioxidants. It's a system that needs just enough stress to trigger its own defenses, plus the raw materials from good food to support those defenses. Megadosing antioxidant supplements without a specific reason is probably not helping you, and might be working against you.
The Bottom Line
Antioxidants from whole foods are protective and part of a healthy diet. High-dose antioxidant supplements? The evidence suggests they're not the shortcut to longevity.
