Glucosamine and Chondroitin: Do Joint Supplements Actually Work?

I'm honest about this: glucosamine/chondroitin is one of the most heavily marketed joint supplements, and the evidence is surprisingly weak. Major trials show minimal benefit for the general OA population.
That said, some people genuinely respond. If you have severe arthritis pain, a 12-week trial might be worth $40-50 to see if you're a responder. But you're not getting cartilage repair—the marketing claim is overblown.
For arthritis management, I'd prioritize in this order: exercise and physical therapy (strongest evidence), weight management (if overweight), curcumin or collagen peptides (better-studied supplements), THEN glucosamine/chondroitin if you want to add everything.
And honestly? If glucosamine/chondroitin isn't helping after 12 weeks, stop and invest in physical therapy or better supplements instead.
